Antelope Park Overview

Antelope Park is a place that seems to have grown from a dream world. Would you ever think it possible to stroll through the African bush, with a free-roaming lion at your side? At Antelope Park this picture becomes reality as you take lions out ‘for a walk’. No collars, no leashes, no fences - you truly will be walking with the King of Beasts.

Antelope Park supports the African Lion and Environmental Research Trust (ALERT) that runs a 4-stage program, working towards ensuring the survival of the African Lion species.

Over 200,000 lions roamed the African continent as recently as 1975 but in 2002 two surveys provided evidence of a dramatic decline estimating that only 23 to 39,000 remain, with the lowest estimate being just 16,500. Many believe the number is even lower than this. This represents an 80 to 90% population decline in less than 30 years. It is widely accepted that the population has continued to decline in the subsequent years.

By visiting Antelope Park and taking part in activities such as the lion walks, you will be taking an active role in the efforts to safe the African Lion. Not only will your activity fees go back into the lion program but by taking the lions out into the bush, you are helping to introduce them to the sights, sounds and smells of their natural habitat and therefore better preparing them for a future of being part of self-sustaining lion prides.

At Antelope Park you will learn about lions and the ALERT lion program. Other than the lion walks, Antelope Park offers you a whole host of other exciting activities, including elephant rides, game viewing on horse back, carriage rides, boat cruises, lion feeds, night encounters – a world exclusive and a chance to see lions hunt their prey in the bush at night – bush walks, game drives and much more.

The Park also has a number of different accommodation available to you, from basic camping, through to luxury honeymoon suites or Self-catering lodges. This is the ideal place to choose whether to treat yourself to some comfort or to rough it; Africa style in a tent under the stars.

Also the perfect place to have your unforgettable wedding day.

Antelope Park is where dreams can come true and where everyone leaves with the knowledge that they have contributed to ensuring the survival of the African Lion.

Going back for a 3rd time, kinda says it all!
Clare Witt from United Kingdom

What can I say, I have been back now twice for a monh each time and have booked again for this August. As a more mature volunteer (just the right side of the big 40!) I was initially concerned that I would feel very old but nothing could be further from the truth! The lions are amazing, walking them twice a day is a priviledge and one that will remain with me for the rest of my life. Returning was great too as I got to walk with some of the lions at 6 months and then at 18 which was incredible. To see their progression was brilliant as you see how much the park does from them. Last year I was lucky enough to be there when there were 3 babies so was able to bottle feed them, a life ambition! Of course there is also hard work, with enclosure cleaning, fence painting, meat prep etc but it is all part of the experience and you just have to be prepared to muck in with the rest. The accomodation for volunteers is basic but perfectly adequate, clean with only an odd spider for company. The water is hot (only twice in 2 months did it run cold) and the food is amazing. Dont expect to lose any weight! With cooked breakfast, 2 course lunch and 3 course dinner there is no chance! from what I have seen of the guest accomodation you are in for a treat. Now with the news of cubs being born to the semi wild release pride, who will be released back into the wild in 3 years, it is an honour to have been a tiny part of the process!

Walking with Lions
Sylvie from Belgium

Last July I was lucky enough to volunteer at the Antelope Park!! Getting up-close and personal with the lions was an amazing experience. But you don't have to do volunteerwork to enjoy everything this park has to offer! Besides the different species of animals (lions, elephants, horses, zebras, giraffe,..) you'll get to see there, you also can also enjoy the hospitality, friendlyness and amazing food from their kitchen! No mather how full you think you are..get the desserts!!! I stayed in a river-tent (2 single beds, tiled floors, bathroom with shower and toilet), heater, safe) and got to see some amazing sunsets over the lake! If you are in the neighbourhood (or not) def a must-visit-place!
