Health Illness and Important Numbers

Malaria
Malaria is prevalent in the lower altitude areas, namely the Zambezi Valley, Hwange, Kariba and Victoria Falls, although it has been known for people to become infected in other areas of Zimbabwe, so it is advisable to take anti malarial drugs when visiting Zimbabwe. It is recommended to bring mosquito repellent, wear long pants and sleeves especially in late afternoon/evening to prevent mosquito bites and to sleep in air conditioned rooms and under mosquito nets. There are a number of anti malarial drugs that can be taken prior and during your visit, see your Doctor to see which is best for you. Malaria symptoms may include fever, chills, sweats, headaches, body aches, nausea, vomiting and fatigue and may appear between 7-14 days after being in a malaria area. Malaria if not treated quickly can be a deadly disease; you should see a doctor immediately and be treated if you have any of the above symptoms.

Vaccinations
The following vaccinations are recommended prior to visiting Zimbabwe:-
Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Measles, mumps, rubella, MMR, Tetanus and Diphtheria.

Bilharzia
Present in all water bodies, it is advisable to avoid wading in still dam water, where you run the risk of getting infected. This illness is easily curable, main symptom is drowsiness and lack of energy.

Cholera
There was a major outbreak of Cholera in Zimbabwe at the end of 2008. Therefore it is recommended to only drink bottled water which is available in most supermarkets and shops, and to avoid drinking any water that has unclear origins. To wash any vegetables and fruit prior to eating it is a very good practise. All travellers should bring with them diarrhoea treatment.

MEDICAL INSURANCE

It is recommended to take out comprehensive medical insurance policy, to cover any emergencies.  There are very good medical facilities in Zimbabwe, however if you are in a remote area you may need to be evacuated by Air to the city centre for treatment., please see details on MARS website.
