![]() Ababuja OverviewThose that appreciate good seafood love the Algarve and they adore Restaurant Àbabuja in Alvor. Located just a few metres from the seafront you can enjoy delicious traditional Algarve cuisine, a wonderful ambience and spectacular views.
Restaurant Àbabuja takes its name from its location. The “babuja” is what the locals call the foam on breaking waves and in the not too distant past it was not unusual to have high tide waves breaking almost at the door. These days the risk of getting your toes wet are negligible, but you can still enjoy the closeness to the seafront, the views of the small marina with its pleasure boats and fishing boats, and the tranquil beauty of the Ria Alvor.
The restaurant consists of a spacious indoor dining room, with brick walls, stone arches and artful lighting. This room is ideal for cosy winter evenings and for groups and family gatherings. The large terrace is the perfect place, in summer or winter, to enjoy a relaxed meal and watch the flow of people strolling along the waterfront. In the winter the terrace is cosily heated and in the summer the glass front, and even the moving roof panels open allowing you to enjoy those mellow Algarve evenings.
Fish and seafood dominate the menu at Àbabuja. Starters include clams, mussels, prawns, cockles and an excellent fish soup. The fish of the day is grilled over charcoal and served with a fresh salad and potatoes. Simple, very Algarve and totally delicious. Àbabuja specials include MonkFish Rice, Caldeirada (a mixed fish stew) and Massada de Peixe – a medley of fish cooked with pasta and perfumed with fresh coriander. If you can’t do without meat, the menu also features a good choice of steak and some pork dishes.
Those with a sweet tooth are not forgotten as Àbabuja has a good selection of desserts and home-made cakes. There is chocolate cake, carob tart and fig tart, flambéed figs, various crepes and mango mousse.
Àbabuja is one of Alvors best known restaurants and is very popular with visitors of all nationalities. We recommend you visit during your stay in the Algarve and recommend you make a reservation, particularly during high season.

September 2009 A fish lovers paradise!
Without a doubt the best fish restaurant I have come across in my travels! I brought eight golfers to Portugal last week for four nights and the food was so good we ate there two of the four nights! Jose and his staff in particular Marco make every visit a special occasion, I couldn't recommend it highly enough! David and Friends - Dublin, Ireland

September 2008 one of the best.
laura from kildare
Alvor is full of restaurants, most of them really good. Ababuja stands out from the rest for its location and of course the food. It's not cheap but we had the best fish of our stay here. We loved that we got to pick the actual fish we wanted and then got to see it being grilled. The only bad point is that the place is so popular, if you don't make a reservation you might not get a table.
