The Costa Blanca is one of the healthiest places in the world to live, according to the World Health Organisation. Even so, the change in environment can sometimes affect your health. Make sure you have medical cover included in your travel insurance or that you have an up-to-date EHIC card if you are from another European country including the UK.

Medical Care

Alicante has excellent health care services with top-class doctors and specialists. Every town has a health centre for consultations with doctors. Also available are 24-hour emergency services, fast referrals to specialists, emergency prescriptions, travel vaccinations and advice.

Pharmacies

If you have a minor ailment, you could ask for advice at the pharmacy before consulting a doctor or going to the hospital. The chemists offer good advice and you may be able to get the creams or pills you need without a prescription.

Pharmacies have a green cross above the door. They are often open from 9am until 9pm while one pharmacy in each town will offer night and weekend cover for emergencies.

Hospitals

Several public hospitals in Alicante and the Costa Blanca are open 24 hours a day. Many have volunteers who can interpret for you.

Emergencies

In Spain, the emergency number is 112 to call an ambulance, fire department or the police. Call the number, say where you are and which service you require. In Spain, some ambulances offer transport only so you have to say if you need a paramedic on board.
