Ikweta Safari Camp

How to get to Ikweta Safari Camp
Driving to the camp is an enjoyable trip and the scenery along the route is stunning. Through Embu or Nanyuki - both ways are equally interesting and enjoyable as you circle around Africa's 2nd largest mountain - Mount Kenya. The camp is clearly signposted at any relevant turn-offs. We thought it was very easy to find.

COMING FROM THE NANYUKI SIDE
1) From Nanyuki side proceed on the B6 highway as if you are heading to Meru.
2) After you clear the Meru Forest, a short distance away from Meru town, the turn off to Maua (on C91 highway) will be to the left at a place called Makutano.
3) You will pass a number of small market centres - Kianjai, Muthara, Kangeta. After Kangeta up a steep hill, you proceed on the highway for another 10 minutes until you encounter two sets of bumps about 2 km apart. After the last set of bumps you will arrive at Maili Tatu market.
4) Proceed down the highway for another 300 metres or so. There is another set of bumps. Maua is straight ahead. To the left is the turnoff to Meru National Park. You will see the sign.
5) Just stay on the tarmacked road. You will pass through several small market centres. At the point where the road forks to a V, veer to the right. You will see the signs for Meru National Park and for Ikweta Safari Camp.

COMING FROM THE EMBU SIDE
(lots of speed bumps on this route - but extremely beautiful)
1) From Embu side into Meru proceed on the B6 highway as if you are heading to Nanyuki. After Nakumatt shopping centre (on left) proceed for about 300 metres up the hill. Turnoff to Maua (on C91 highway) will be to the right at a place called Makutano.

3) Proceed down the highway for another 300 metres or so. There is another set of bumps. Maua is straight ahead. To the left is the turnoff to Meru National Park. You will see the sign.
4) Just stay on the tarmaced road. You will pass through several small market centres. At the point where the road forks to a V, veer to the right. You will see the signs for Meru National Park and for Ikweta Safari Camp.

Ikweta Safari Camp Overview

Ikweta Safari Camp lets you explore the Meru National Park: known to be one of Africa’s most beautiful and unspoilt national parks. Ikweta Safari Camp offers you affordable luxury in a small, new tented camp just 2 kilometers from the park's Main Gate. A stay at this lovely camp gives you a high-standard of services in an environment noted for simple elegance, style and convenience.

Recommended for:

If you're looking to get away from it all - this is definitely the place to come to. It has everything that you could need from a luxury campsite, and the peace and tranquility is just heavenly. We love it!

There is another hotel half an hour away owned by the same people called of Ikweta Country Inn. This offers the the same style of elegant accommodation at an affordable price.

Ikweta Safari Camp Accommodation:

The 10 semi permanent luxury tents all feature charming makuti thatched roofs with tasteful safari-style furnishings. They are spacious and are equipped with high quality furniture (twin or double beds). Each tent has a private veranda and an en-suite bathroom with flush toilets, shower and 24-hour hot and cold water. The camp has electricity throughout.

Ikweta Safari Camp Facilities:

There is a swimming pool among the beautifully landscaped grounds. Ikweta Safari Camp has a restaurant called the "Two Zebras" which serves fresh local produce. An open plan lounge offers guests a chance to relax after game drives and as you might expect a well-appointed bar by the pool - perfect for sundowners. The camp is very much in tune with nature, with a wonderful chorus of birdsong, frogs, chicaddas in the evenings. 3G Wireless Internet and DSTV are also available if you don;'t want to leave your communications too far behind!

Ikweta Safari Camp Location:

Ikweta is on the doorstep of the Meru National Park Main Gate. Morning and evening game drives are a must as the scenery is just stunning and Meru is wonderfully unspoiled with far few visitors than most other parks in Kenya. Advice can be given to visit places locally with special scenic beauty and interesting features. When we visited, we found the park to be just great - we saw no other cars as we drive around, and plenty of giraffe, elephant, antelope and more birds than you could name. Cultural evenings of music and dance, in collaboration with Ameru Cultural Centre and Malka Bisanadi Cultural Village are also something that the camp can easily arrange.
