Pod Aniolami Overview

One of the shining stars in Krakow’s restaurant heaven, Pod Aniolami (literally “under the angels”) at 35 Grodzka Street offers one of the finest traditional Polish menus you will find, and has a stack of awards to back this claim up. Situated in a beautifully restored 13th century former goldsmiths’ workshop directly adjacent to Galeria Skarbiec, Pod Aniolami boasts a guest list groaning with famous names.

The surprisingly modest entrance beneath gilded angels leads to a ground-level dining area, beyond which is a year-round roofed garden with a mosaic fountain, birds singing and an open beech wood grill. The garden has room for 40-50 people. Downstairs are two cellar dining rooms, again featuring a traditional beech wood grill and looking for all the world like the setting for a medieval banquet. A private room on the first floor is also available for parties and receptions.

Onto the menu, which draws its inspiration from traditional Polish high cuisine recipe books of the 17th century. The centerpiece is undoubtedly the array of marinated meat dishes, grilled over burning beech chips and garnished in classical Polish style. Grilled fish – salmon or trout – is available, and there is even a vegetarian option. Hors d’Oeuvres include typical Polish warm and cold starters and soups, and there is a selection of classic pierogi varieties. There are also “Fire” dishes – whole joints of meat with trimmings cooked to advance order.

There is of course an extensive wine list as well as traditional Polish vodkas, slivovitz, etc. Booking is recommended, as it is not unknown for the restaurant (which has a total capacity of 120 guests, and can also cater for far greater numbers at external functions) to be completely reserved for private receptions.
