Queen Victoria Market

Markets City Sights

A Melbourne institution, and a shopper's delight.

Don't miss Melbourne's famous market, affectionately called The Vic or Queen Vic, that stretches over two city blocks and contains over 600 retailers offering every type of goods imaginable, from local and imported gourmet foods to cosmetics, clothing and souvenirs. The market, which is the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, is divided into various Market Precincts, including the Deli Hall, where one can pick up artisan cheeses, dressed meats and takeaway meals, Vic Market Place Food Court, Fruit and Vegetables, The Meat Hall, which offers a wide variety of meat as well as 10 expert fishmongers, Organics and the Wine Market.

There are also numerous shopping areas where one can purchase other items, including clothing, arts and crafts.

While you're visiting, you must look out for the doughnut van, which has operated for over 50 years and has become part of local tradition. You can't possibly leave the market without sampling one of its delicious hot jam doughnuts!

The market is open five days a week and is closed on Mondays and Wednesdays. Sundays are particularly popular, as Queen Street becomes a pedestrian precinct where buskers and other entertainers strut their stuff and delight the crowds. While the variety on offer is vast, the prices are also a draw card, and one can pick up some excellent bargains here. Be prepared to spend at least 3 hours exploring - it's well worth it!
