Otjiwarongo
The name Otjiwarongo means "place where fat cattle graze"in Herero, paying perfect homage to it being an agricultural hub with its thorn bush environment. The first occupants arrived around 1900 and the settlement later gained the status of town due to the Otavi railway line passing through. Today Otjiwarongo is a bustling agricultural and economic center with shops, businesses, schools and character. It is also attributed the title of "cheetah capital of the world"with the nearby Cheetah Conservation Fund playing a vital role in the protection and relocation of the cheetah population in conjunction with local farmers. It is estimated that around 20% of the world population of cheetahs make their home In this area. The majestic Waterberg Plateau lies within reach while the northern routes and the Etosha National Park beckon as well. Otjiwarongo is a great pass through to stock up on all necessary supplies to traverse the rest of the country, but do not miss a cup of tea and freshly baked at one of the quaint coffee shops.
