Jaisalmer Information

My Destination

Once a sleepy desert city, Jaisalmer has now transformed into a major tourist destination. Nestled picturesquely in the midst of the Thar Desert, the city commands a premiere position among the numerous tourist attractions scattered over the deserts of Rajasthan.

The city is said to have been founded by Raja Rawal Jaisal - a Bhatti Rajput ruler - in 1156. According to legend, he did it on the request of a local hermit named Eesaal.

Jaisalmer is often called the 'Golden City' because of the copious levels of sunshine in the region. The sunlight has the magical effect of making the yellow sandstone buildings seem as though they have been crafted from solid gold.

You can discover different sides to this wonderful desert city by exploring not only its 'sights', but also wandering in the lanes of the city as well as the fort, which is a living monument to the courage of the rulers and dwellers of the city. People still reside in the 900-year-old fort and, remarkably, the wells still provide water. Not bad for 900 year old wells. Not bad at all.

Some important distances are:

Nearest Airport is Jodhpur Airport 264 kms away.

Delhi-793 kms, Jaipur-523 kms, Udaipur-574 kms and Bikaner-333 kms

Some Major Attractions in Jaisalmer:

Jaisalmer Fort known as 'Sonarkella', Gadsisar Lake, Patwon-ki-Haveli, Nathmalji-ki-Haveli, Manak Chowk, Sam Sand Dunes.
