Wishing to guide the fishermen and microlight aircraft nearby, its founder André Araújo installed a windsock right on the top of his beach bar, founded in 1994 at the Pina Beach, to the northern end of Boa Viagem. Biruta, the Portuguese word for windsock, eventually became the official name of the best beach bar in Recife - top position in a leading Brazilian gastronomy magazine awards 2012/2013.
Biruta's spectacular location - a two-storey house looking out over the sand and natural swimming pools - provides visitors with a relaxed, soothing atmosphere. The quiet surroundings allow for no-fuss meetings and conversations, a suitable destination for couples on their own.
The owner supports many causes to protect local culture, music and cuisine, which makes Biruta's public a real melting pot. On Thursdays and Friday nights there are often live bands playing a mixture of Brazilian and international rhythms, either for free or a moderate cover charge.
Essentially, a beach bar should offer the best in seafood (hence it's full name - Biruta Bar - Comedorias do Mar) and of course, it couldn't be any different with Biruta. If in doubt on what to order, give the pan-fried garfish agulha frita a go, or, if you're open to unusual combinations, (and you definitely should!), try the deep-fried crab stuffed pastel de siri, with finger-licking tropical cajá fruit dip. Luscious seafood stews are served with white rice, gravy thickened with manioc flour − the authentic pirão − and special palm oil toasted manioc farofa. Grab your choice of tropical fruits caipirinha and it will be hard to improve on.
