Esjan

Take a walk up the Esja and see the city takes about one and a half hour.
Esjan is a volcanic mountain range in South West Iceland, 10km north of Reykjavik. Built up at the start of the Ice Age, it stands at an impressive height, towering over the city. Due to its location so close to the city, it has become a very popular recreation centre for local and visiting hikers and climbers.
Once you arrive at the foot of the mountain range, it is an impressive enough sight as it is. However, as many people do, you may feel compelled to take a climb along the rocky paths. There are a number of signs along the trail indicating the difficulty of the walking route, with one boot indicating an easy pathway and three boots beginning to emerge further up where the paths get more challenging.
200m below the top there is a sign marked by the big rock 'Steinn' with fantastic views where many climbers choose to turn back as the path beyond gets more difficult. However, if you're an experienced climber you may manage to get right to the top. The highest point is called 'Habunga' and is marked only by a large rock with a wooden stick mounted at the top, indicating how few people get that far.
