Icelands most active volcano started erupting on Saturday evening with enormous power. In the beginning the volcano spewed 15-20.000 tons of ash every second.

Sunday morning the Keflavik International airport and Reykjavik Domestic airport was shut down. Today, Monday (May 23rd) it´s expected that airports will open again in the evening. Icelandair is expecting to resume flights at 8pm and has added extra flights to make up for the cancelled flights of yesterday.

Heavy ash fall has been in South Iceland in the area closest to the volcano. Iceland´s main road is currently closed in the area. In certin areas there is no sign of daylight due to the heavy ash cloud.

We are currently working on finding a good webcam stream that shows the volcano and will add it as soon as possible.

More information soon.

March 22nd - April 20th 2010

Early on Sunday morning (the 21st of March) eruption started at Fimmvorduhals, an area between Katla volcano and Eyjafjallajokull glacier and a popular hiking trail. Fear remains that the eruption at Fimmvorduhals might trigger a much larger eruption in Katla volcano. The eruption at Fimmvorduhals has now stopped but a new eruption in Gígjokull glacier started on April 14th 2010.

The two new webcams showing Eyjafjallajokull glacier and provide a view of the eruption area were installed by Mila. The Hekla webcam (bottom of page) was installed in partnership between Iceland´s National Radio, Iceland´s Civil Protection Department and Siminn telephone. Volcanic activity is best viewed during dusk (6pm-8pm local time) as night falls and daylight reduces.

Hekla is a 1491 meter high volcano, located in the highlands of Iceland. Hekla is the most active volcano in Iceland and often referred to as the Queen of Iceland´s volcanoes.

Hekla last erupted in February of 2000. Scientists believe that Hekla is likely to erupt soon and if that happens – you will be able to watch it happen live – right here!

In ancient times Hekla was thought to be the entrance to hell or even hell it self. It´s was in 1750 that the first people hiked to the top of Hekla.
