Giardini Naxos Information

When the sun starts to rise on those hot summer days in Sicily, Giardini Naxos is the place to be. This charming and bustling coastal town founded in 735 BC lies below Taormina, which sits proudly right on the top of the rock just 4km down the road. Giardini Naxos is one of the most sought after holiday destinations in Sicily, not only for its location, a 'stones throw' from Taormina, but also for its fantastic beaches, views, nightlife, bars, restaraunts and clubs, all of which will dazzle you, and there is something to suit all tastes and budgets.

How to get to Giardini Naxos

Giardini Naxos lies below Taormina and buses to and from Taormina run every 30 mins. If you are coming from Palermo take the A19 to Catania and from there follow the A18. Giardini is also a good base for exploring, so trips to Messina, Taormina, Catania and Syracuse are all easily within reach. You may also consider an excursion to Mount Etna or the Aeolian Islands from Milazzo.

Things to do and see in Giardini Naxos

There are a few sights that are worth seeing. The Chiesa di Sant Maria Raccomandata dates back to the 18th century, and underwent a very succesful restoration back in the 19th century and holds the beautiful painting of Madonna di Porto Salvo from the 15th century. The Parco Archeologico di Naxos is an archeological park with a museum, where you can wander and admire remains of the area's history as well as finds from shipwrecks.

The focal point is the seafront with the noisy main street Via Tysandros, which is bordered with restaurants, bars, hotels and shops. Having spent a few nights in Giardini we loved our evening passegiatas along this street. Even after midnight, the town is still buzzing, restaurants are open and people are strolling with smiling toddlers in their pushchairs.

The coastline is almost 4 km long and there are several fine sandy beaches. Some of them are for free, 'spiagga libera' ,while others, for a small fee, are equipped with umbrellas, loungers, watersports and bars selling ice cream, chilled drinks and small snacks and are very well kept. In the evening some of the beaches become night life spots with a beach party atmosphere. If you're around during the middle of August, especially the night of the 14th and 15th of August, everyone celebrates 'Ferragosto' and the beaches are literally teaming with young people, with tents set up for the night, dancing and celebrating. It is a fantastic event and we recommend for you to come and see yourself, however do book accomodation well in advance and be prepared for crowds.

Nightlife and entertainment in Giardini Naxos is great. There a several clubs, bars with karaoke, restaurants with extensive menus, bars with live music, theatre's and let's not forget to mention musicians in traditional sicilian costumes strolling through the streets.

Giardini is often considered when visiting Taormina, as the hotels and restaurants here have a friendlier prices than up in Taormina. There are several hotels, pensions, private villas and b&b's to cater for all budgets.
