Golf del Sur
Nestled on the southern coast of Tenerife you’ll find the lively resort of the Golf del Sur which is a haven for erm, you’ve guessed it…golfers! It stands out as a lush verdant area, and while it may be close to Tenerife airport, the planes are part of the charm…trust us they are.
It’s the place to go for everything golf. The landscape here is dominated by lush greens and fairways, palm trees, ravines, indigenous plants, not to mention lovers of this therapeutic sport. And of course, there are driving ranges and clubhouses-a-plenty, including a 27-hole championship course, (personally we think the ‘sport’ is just an excuse to burn around in a golf cart and a knees-up after, but there’s nothing wrong with that I suppose). But it’s not just local men and women armed with sticks hitting tiny balls into holes who are attracted to this particular part of the sunny rock. Other folk from far afield descend on this volcanic island in their droves.
These days the largest of the Canary Islands offers a lot more besides the clichéd sun, sea and sangria. Sure there’s the beautiful Atlantic Ocean, obviously the Sangria flows like water but what else is going on I hear you ask? Let me tell you…
A beautiful coastal walk (with a few steep hills, so take your time) runs the length of the shoreline. But don’t worry, you don’t need walking boots or an athlete-esque fitness to enjoy it. Take your time, take a pew on the many benches which provide a bit of respite on the way and above all, enjoy that ‘wind in your hair’ feeling while the sun beats down from the glorious blue skies above.
This walk starts in Amarilla Golf where there is a lovely marina (departure point for Submarine Safaris) and runs all the way throuh Golf del Sur, taking in a little town called San Blas. Here you’ll find a dynamic commercial centre consisting of three squares packed full of shops, restaurants and bars. By day, people tend to take in the tapas, sit in the square people-watching, and by night, take in the nightly music (think Sweet Caroline, Brown Eyed Girl and Show Me The Way To Amarillo) when diners lap up the party atmosphere, not to mention the cheap booze.
There are some great restaurants here too serving anything from traditional Canarian/Spanish food to authentic English fodder.
